Arania is an underwater independent city-state maintaining close relations with Vale. It is positioned over massive geothermal vents from which it gets its energy. It looks like a snowflake-shaped bubble of air deep under the ocean. The city is comprised of three 'rings', connected by large tubular passageways, with a central dome connecting it all. The city is completely self-sufficient when it comes to food, fishing for its food supply and creating artificial sunlight for growing some types of crops. Not many outsiders visit the city, as it is fairly difficult to get to, but the place is essentially a utopia, with 0% crime rate.
Arania was founded many years ago when people were looking for different ways to escape the Grimm hordes. A group of settlers decided they would look to the sea for salvation, and began construction of the city with the support of some particularly rich families who wanted safety. Initially, the city consisted of only the central dome, but as more people moved there, they had to expand.
The people of Arania come from many different backgrounds, but, after living underwater for so many generations, have forgotten about their ancestry and consider themselves "Aranian". Many of them have some level of disdain for people from the surface, but the small government of the city knows that it is in their best interest to continue to cooperate with them. Currently, the city has around 259,000 inhabitants, but it has begun growing lately due to more threats from Grimm on the surface.
The city does not have any industry that is powered by fossil fuels, and instead, any industry that they do have is run using the city's geothermal generators. As a result, they continue to import goods from the surface, and they have a substantial amount of trade with each of the nearby kingdoms.
